Richter Support With Railway Cutting Slip Remediation.

Published: 23/07/2021 09:46

Following heavy rainfall at the end of February 2020, a railway cutting near Red Lane in Dorking underwent a transitional slip failure, depositing clay at the toe and obstructing the down-line.

Richter was contracted to oversee the initial removal and trimming of the failed material on the slope, providing the design and managing the implementation of a short-term retaining solution to ensure no further slips would obstruct the line while a permanent remedial solution could be developed and constructed.

In order to install the temporary retention solution, Richter instructed the re-profiling of the slope to remove loose material and cut back to sound stable ground, removal of the pre-cast concrete trough route and its relocation to an area immediately in front of the bulk rubble bags; regrading of the slope behind the retaining system.

Richter also instructed further ground investigation works and developed an understanding of the failure mechanism that had occurred to ensure the permanent solution was targeted at resolving the correct problem.

Working closely with the client and subcontractors, a holistic remedial solution that met the needs of Network Rail was developed to directly addresses the correct failure mechanism and mitigate against further risk of a similar failure. In addition, Richter designed all of the temporary works elements required to take the permanent construction through to completion.

The temporary and permanent designs were completed for submission to Network Rail ahead of the main contractor’s schedule to ensure their programme was met, and Richter remained on hand throughout completion of the works to provide engineering assistance as required.
